How Monte Sereno Came To Be
The tale of how Monte Sereno came to be is one of perseverance, hard work and creative thinking. Back in the 1950s, Monte Sereno was in unincorporated Santa Clara County and Monte Sereno real estate lay in a hilly, idyllic setting much as it still does today. The wheels of progress were grinding inexorably on, however, and before the ‘50s were over, Monte Sereno was more or less forced to incorporate.
“About 1954, a type of civil war broke out in Santa Clara County with cities fighting verbally with one another regarding the annexation of land,” first mayor and prime mover Admiral Thomas B. Inglis, USN (Ret.) explained in an interview more than 20 years ago. “We didn't want to be annexed by anybody. At that time, we simply wanted to stay in the county.”
Annexation seemed inevitable unless the community would make a move, and if they didn’t then the semi-rural location that made Monte Sereno real estate special would give way to all kinds of developments. Wanting to preserve the area’s bucolic feel, keep everything residential and the taxes low, owners of Monte Sereno real estate, under the leadership of Admiral Inglis, pushed for incorporation and eventually succeeded. Monte Sereno officially became a city on May 14, 1957.
